I’ve read three really great YA books over the past 6 months, all which coincidentally take place around the time of the Vietnam war or many years afterwards, with the war a sad dark shadow of the characters’ past. Keeping Score, by Linda Sue Park; The Wednesday Wars, by Gary Schmidt; and most recently The Running Man, by Michael Bauer.

Anthony also read The Wednesday Wars and The Running Man — he wasn’t nearly as affected by The Running Man as I was (yes, I was weeping at the end) — my guess is that he’s too young to appreciate the larger themes and that either this book could be recommended to kids older than 11 or that a kid his age needs to be guided through it, maybe via a book club. — Lisa
