This is a great, suspenseful historical novel set in Boston just after the end of the first World War. It’s the story of two families, one white, one black. Danny Coughlin is a cop, son of the beloved and powerful police captain, Luther Laurence is from the Midwest on the run from his past. Through their stories Lehane draws a fascinating picture of the social injustices, corrupt politicians, the struggling working class in turbulent times. Filled with unforgettable fictional and real characters (Babe Ruth, Calvin Coolidge, Mitchell Palmer) it all culminates in the 1919 Boston Police Strike.
Great storytelling — all 700 pages!
