Where do you group books for young adults? Near the kids books? Of course not. Young adults want to be identified as adults, not big kids. What sixteen year old wants to be skulking among the shelves, looking for a dark teenage angst book with Beezus and Ramona right next to them? No wonder these terrific books aren’t selling in our store!

Thank you, anonymous teenager for your candid remarks about our YA placement (to your friends, not me — I was eavesdropping), and thank you Sharon and Liz Peto for thinking through the logic and redesign with me. I started pulling books off shelves tonight, and the new organization of these sections will finally give life to these poor books, which have been suffering an identity crisis under my ownership. So now in addition to having a kids’ play area, we need to introduce a KIDS’ MAKE-OUT area…
